Named for a sincere drinker and recommended only for such

March 21, 2008

Last night’s intensive study of Good Spirits by A. J. Rathbun led me to try the Ed Dexter. Rathbun states he found this recipe in a small 1934 pamphlet titled Irvin S. Cobb’s Own Recipe Book. Based on this one drink, and the fact the man wrote a book titled Red Likker, I’d like to […]

MxMo: Limit One — Mahjongg Cocktail

March 16, 2008

Upon reading the theme for this Mixology Monday, I drew a blank. The only recipe I know well that fit the bill was the Mai Tai, which I really love to make. But it seems like MxMo should be an encouragement to try something new, and I certainly didn’t want to fall into the newbie […]

cocktail geekery

March 15, 2008

I use the CocktailDB quite frequently. I’m lazy, and thus hate going to the search page to start a search, when I usually am just starting with one ingredient or a recipe name. So I created OpenSearch plugins for Firefox for the recipe name and ingredient search at CocktailDB. If you go the linked page […]

I did not know that

March 15, 2008

Bushmill’s is the preferred whiskey of Irish Protestants, it being made in Northern Ireland, while Catholics tend to prefer Jameson, vatted in Dublin and distilled in Cork. I suspect it’s my long-held preference for Scotch that prevented me from learning this critical information; that and generally avoiding reading about St. Patrick’s Day drinking tomfoolery.

Incidentally

March 14, 2008

Vermouth can make a great replacement for wine in recipes. One night we had no white wine in the house when Bryan went to make one of my favorite dishes, a chicken and garlic stew that calls for a hardy addition of white wine. I did have plenty of white vermouth in the fridge, which […]

Don’t Blink

March 13, 2008

I’ve always like grapefruit, as long as the ingestion of said fruit included adding lots of sugar. As a kid, it was a frequent weekend breakfast food, always served halved, covered in sugar, eaten with a spoon. Bryan, on the other hand, hates grapefruit. He made this clear when I brought home a six pack […]

Clover Club

March 11, 2008

I finally broke down and bought a cocktail shaker (my previous shaking method involved a pint glass and a tupperware lid). I’ve been meaning to order a Boston shaker since I can’t seem to find one in stores. In the short term, I got an inexpensive number from the world market. To break in my […]

Aperol

March 9, 2008

I picked up a bottle of Aperol at Washington State Store #101, which for those in the know is the store to know about, since it’s the most likely to have interesting items on the shelf. Tonight I opened the bottle of Aperol, and on first taste new I was going to like this “little […]

[Redmond] Wine Tastings

March 6, 2008

Turns out Malt & Vine, a nice, if small, beer and wine shop here in Redmond, has weekly tastings. Beers on Friday night, wines on Saturday afternoon. They’re a little low on whites right now, but plan to be putting in more coolers and bringing more in as the weather warms. Seem like good folk.

Spanish White Suggestions Sought

March 5, 2008

Tomorrow afternoon is the weekly wine tasting at work. Theme this week is Spanish wines. Somebody’s already bringing Martin Codax Albariño, which is my current fave, so I’m looking for some suggestions of other nice Spanish whites (I still can’t drink red) in the <$20 range.
